Luisium

Palace and Park

It is no coincidence that the name “Luisium” is based on Elysium: The picturesque park near Dessau remains peaceful and idyllic to this day. Anyone looking for a peaceful place to enjoy a leisurely stroll will fall in love with the charming little landscaped park and its little castle. It is simply elysian.

History

A temple of feminine virtues

Prince Franz had a very private residence built for his wife Louise from 1774 to 1778. Since 1780, this small country house, surrounded by a 14-hectare landscaped park, has been known as the “Luisium”. Perfect in its delicacy and harmonious design, the small palace is one of the most important buildings by architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff.

The interior of the country house is decorated with numerous works of art, wall and ceiling paintings: embodiments of female virtues, personifications of painting, poetry, reading and music or fruit and flower garlands. Birds and butterflies can also be discovered among them – yes, an eye for detail is rewarded.

Did you know?

The whole country as a garden

The churches dominate the landscape of the Garden Realm of Dessau-Wörlitz like landmarks. One particular example is the baroque church of St. Bartholomäi, as its neoclassical church tower rises towards the sky in the form of a gigantic obelisk – a monumental gravestone that can be seen from the upper floor of Luisium Palace. Alongside his wife Louise, Prince (from 1807 Duke) Franz also found his final resting place here. You can also visit the church.
