House of the princess

(Haus der Fürstin)

Exhibition Centre

A touch of melancholy surrounds Princess Louise’s house in Wörlitz. Because here she once found a private but lonely refuge and lived far away from the many visitors to the famous Wörlitz Palace, far from the Dessau court, far from her husband. It is all the more beautiful that the Princess House is now enlivened and filled with stories and the joy of our guests as an exhibition centre – all year round.

History

A Grey Monastery

In 1789/90, a neo-Gothic building was built not far from Wörlitz Palace as the main residence of Princess Louise. From 22 November 1790 she lived in this “Grey Monastery” until her death in 1811.

The building, designed by Friedrich Willhelm von Erdmannsdorff, originally had five window axes. The first subsequent extension was made in 1804/05 according to designs by Carlo Ignazio Pozzi: a long gallery that allowed the princess to walk and stay dry even in bad weather. In 1855 and 1866 it was expanded again by the descendants in order to meet their demands for a summer residence.

What to expect

A guest of Princess Louise

Visiting

Remnants of original wall decoration and even furnishings of the princess can still be seen today. These include an elegant desk, where she may have spent many hours of her life writing her diaries. But the gallery in particular still invites you to walk in Louise’s footsteps under its ogival ceiling along the windows with stained glass.

The whole country as a garden

Permanent Exhibition

Under the title “The whole country is a garden”, the Garden Realm and those personalities who created, shaped and visited it are presented. But what were the intentions of the so-called “beautification of the country”? And what led to the petty principality becoming an exemplary “Garden Realm”? A must for all those who want to look beyond the obvious beauty of Wörlitz Park into the Garden Realm!
