Georgium

Palace and Park

In the Dessau Georgium, it is fascinating to see how cleverly an already existing floodplain forest, the so-called Beckerbruch, has been integrated into the English landscape park. In this way, excellent garden art and the wild nature of the Elbe meadows merge into a homogeneous unit. The heart of the complex is the classicist Georgium Palace, which rises like a silent sentinel from the green expanses and invites you to visit the art-historical treasures inside.

History

Connection between art and nature

Around 1780, an ambitious project began to blossom on the sandy fields and meadows northwest of the residential city of Dessau: the Georgium. It was Prince Johann Georg of Anhalt-Dessau, the younger brother of the visionary Prince Franz, who cherished and made the dream of this landscape park come true. Most of the buildings were designed by Friedrich Willhelm von Erdmannsdorff. From 1780/81 he also created the palace in the sense of an English country house – of classicist simplicity and elegance. In 1958, the collections of the Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie (Anhalt Picture Gallery) moved into the rooms and today give the former country house the function of a modern museum.
