Church of St. Peter

Brick landmark in the Garden Realm

Visible from afar, the neo-Gothic church tower of St. Petri stands out above the Garden Realm and marks the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Wörlitz. The brick tower measures 66 meters and was probably the last major construction project in Wörlitz Park under Prince Franz.

History

Neo-Gothic as a commitment to tradition

St. Peter’s Church is much older than Wörlitz Park. It was consecrated as early as 1200. However, it was only between 1805 and 1809, under the supervision of Georg Christoph Hesekiel, that it was given its present appearance: As a red brick building, decorated with neo-Gothic forms and tracery, it has towered over Wörlitz ever since.

A stone sarcophagus in the churchyard, which is surrounded by neo-Gothic buildings: the princess’s house, the stables and the kitchen building, is a reminder of the former cemetery. An impressive architectural ensemble and the earliest of its kind in Germany! For Prince Franz, it was a commitment to his own roots and those of his family.
