Schloss Wörlitz

A masterpiece of classicism

Anyone who enters Wörlitz Palace will be amazed. Like the surrounding park, the country house is a journey through the world and time in miniature. Admire antique sculptures, Italian and Dutch paintings, English ceramics, chinoise rooms, the finest silk wallpapers, noble neoclassical furnishings and all kinds of technical innovations. These are the collected interests and travel impressions of Prince Franz, which reflect a unique reflection of the spirit of the Enlightenment.

History

Artistic appreciation and innovation

Park Wörlitz was only a few years old when Schloss Wörlitz was built as its central building. From 1769 to 1773, the first purely classicist palace building on the European mainland was built. It was designed according to the latest English models by the architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff for the young Prince Leopold III Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau.

In the spirit of the Enlightenment, even in the 18th century, guests were welcomed, guided through the rooms and were able to see what technical achievements the prince had brought to Anhalt-Dessau. And even today, the closets and folding beds, refrigerators, dumbwaiters and adjustable furniture surprise when presented to guests.

The South Seas in the Garden Realm

In the mezzanine of the palace, you will find evidence of Polynesian life around 1770, which can no longer be found in the countries of origin today.
